At Wantirna South Primary School, we offer a number of opportunities for talented students to be involved in stimulating and exciting activities. Our school band involves students from Grades 3 to 6 and brings together the children to practise their instrumental and singing skills and then perform at assemblies and community events.
We hold a biennial Musical Production that involves all grades from Prep to Year 6. The children enjoy learning the various skills of singing, dancing, acting and stage presence to be part of a performance in the atmosphere of the theatre. Past Productions have included VINCERELLA (written by our performing arts teacher Mr. Darren Downs and based loosely on a ‘kid friendly’ 1980’s version of GREASE), CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, BACK TO THE MUSIC (a multimedia musical journey through the last 60 years of popular music, written by Darren Downs) and THE WIZARD OF OZ.
In 2020, our production will be presented as a ‘movie musical’ and based on the ‘Faraway Tree’ books by Enid Blyton. Using a professional film crew, the students will be filmed in and outside of the school environment and introduced to the skills of working to a camera, using sound recording equipment and film editing.
Wantirna South school choir welcomes children from Year 1 through to Year 6 who love to sing. The choir sings for school activities including Open Night, Grandparent’s Concert, and school Fete. They also perform for our local retirement villages and other community events hosted by Knox City Council.
Private Instrumental Music
Children can learn a musical instrument at school. Private lessons of half hour duration are available in violin, keyboard, drums and guitar. Each semester an informal Soiree is held for the children to experience performing for family and friends.
WaSPS Dance Club is open for children who are interested in this area of the performing arts. Michelle Vinen runs groups for Junior Dancers (Prep-Year 2) and for Senior Dancers (Year 3-6), which is conducted during recess and lunch times. There is a small fee parents pay for this program.
Another exciting activity Wantirna South offers is Glee Club which showcases students vocal talents from Year 3 – 6 bringing them together focusing on pitch, tone and harmonies.
When opportunities arise we like to perform at special school and community events.
