Literacy at Wantirna South
An understanding of the English language is essential to effective communication. At Wantirna South Primary School, we aim to develop critical and creative learners with the capacity to think, analyse and successfully participate in the wider community. Our staff supports students in developing a love of Literacy.
Students are encouraged to read a wide variety of texts in different contexts and for different purposes. Our daily reading sessions are taught using the workshop model in each session, students are explicitly taught a new skill or strategy with opportunities to practise with others and independently.
At Wantirna South Primary School we use the Big Write and VCOP approach for raising the standards in writing across all ages and ability levels. Based on the premise that if they can say it, they can write it, we support children to become articulate thinkers and speakers, who will then become articulate writers. From Foundation to Year 6 we develop writing skills in a wide variety of genres.
